Big Mama’s Tea Cakes

Tea Cakes have to be one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth. I’ve eaten them my whole life. The simple goodness simply cannot be improved upon. Just this last Christmas season, my daughter did a Google search for the best sugar cookie recipe. She found one that had hundreds of reviews to tout the deliciousness of this recipe, so she went about making them. When we tasted them, we both smiled. This recipe that had gone so viral tasted exactly like the ones my Momma makes and my Daddy swears is the closest to his Big Mama’s. I hope you enjoy it and remember a time when home-made was the only way.

7 1/2 cups self-rising flour

4 eggs

4 Tablespoons of buttermilk( don’t substitute sweet milk…)

2 sticks of butter

2 1/2 cups sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream butter and sugar together. Add milk, vanilla, and eggs. Beat well. Mix in half of flour mixture, then add rest of flour. Let set in refrigerator until chilled(over night if possible). Roll and cut into desired shapes, may be sprinkled with sugar for decoration. Bake in 350 degrees.

My recipe doesn’t have how long to cook them. I watch the oven carefully and then remember for the next round of pans…sorry. It’s how we roll..

Side note, my¬†family has a preference for “soft cookies”. So, I roll them a little thick. I also use parchment paper on my cookie sheets for easy removal and clean up. Make sure you have some milk handy. You will want it to enjoy with the cookies!
