What Do Your Favorites Say About You?

I found myself over at Michael Hyatt’s blog  this week. This particular blog post was about helping people find their passions. One exercise directed the reader to name three favorite movies. Next, to examine those three movies and determine the common thread that runs through each.

I have watched each of these more times than I care to admit.
1. Steel Magnolias
2 ShawShank Redemption
3. Gone with the Wind

What do I love these?

Steel Magnolias celebrates friendship and family life in the South. The southern accents are like honey coating my ears. I just love it. I ball my eyes out every single time Shelby falls out from kidney transplant rejection. My heart breaks for her Momma, M’Lynn when her baby girl dies. I laugh to the point of the tears rolling down my legs when Clairee tells M’Lynn to knock the day lights out of Wheezer just because she needs to hit something. Every single time the credits roll at the end, I am emotionally exhausted. I feel like I just lived through the characters.

ShawShank Redemption is a brutal movie that still manages to celebrate a great friendship. Morgan Freeman narrates a great story and weaves the story of friendship and perseverance. Andy finds a way out and finds peace on a stretch of beach restoring an old boat. I think there is a bit of forgiveness in there.

Gone With the Wind drew a picture of a South long gone. It was a love story gone astray, lives lived according to expectation and many times disappointment. It is a story of a girl who always put her big girl panties on and found a way to put food on the table. She finally figured out who her true love was even if it was too late. Scarlett gave us a great quote…”Tomorrow is another day!”

Now that I wrote all that down, the theme that runs through all three? Friendship, storytelling, and perseverance. Hmmm, no great surprise there..All three have some great southern accents along with  life, death and  friendships.

Want to play along? What about yours? What commonalities did you see? Please leave your 3 movies and a little commentary in the comments below!
