What Do You Do?

What is the first thing you ask someone when you meet them for the first time? One of the firsts is many times “what do you do?”.  It is so easy to do. I read a blog recently by Seth Godwin that he likes to ask people what they love to do. What a novel idea. I have started doing this just a little. Guess what…they generally walk away smiling. Thinking of that one thing they love. Interesting.

I am 47 have worn many hats over that time. I’ve been a student, a nurse, a new wife, a new mom, a stay at home mom, a room mom, a work part-time nurse, a girl scout leader, a Sunday school teacher,  and a working full-time mom. Obviously, there was over lap many times. Last year I began writing this blog and  Eye Roll Diaries, and co-founded a local service/social ladies group called The Milton Sweet Tea Society. What do I love to do? I love to connect people. I have lived in my town for 20 years. I laughingly say that I don’t need any more friends. I can barely see the ones I have with my family’s busy schedule. The trouble is, I keep meeting interesting people. No, I don’t necessarily spend big chunks of time with them. I still enjoy meeting them and finding out what makes them smile.

I was on a girls’ trip recently with my dear Hippie Chicks and I challenged them with this question. “What do you love to do? It proved a little tougher for them to answer than I expected. I think these girls are the “bees knees”. They are smart, generous, funny, and kind. They alse have gotten busy with life. Like most people, we all get caught up in our daily grind. Get up , go to work, get kids to school, take care of our homes, run errands, drive kids to their very important activities, plan and prepare meals. Repeat. It can be difficult to press pause and think, “What do I love to do?”. How about what would I love to do?

We all need to find a happy place that lets our imaginations open up and consider options. We need to listen to what God has planned for us. If I asked you my question, how would you reply? What would make you smile?

Lovely post! I’ve always said the lucky people are the ones who get paid to do what they love, whether it be photography, lawn mowing, or jewelry repair. I’ve worked in a variety of fields and can honestly say I’ve enjoyed at least some aspects of each. Perhaps that’s the answer: trying to find happiness and peace in everything and every day!

Debbie, there is wisdom there no matter how you look at it. Yes, surely , finding the beauty in each day is wonderful. Also making sure that you do something everyday that you love is lovely too. Maybe they are the same thing??

  2. I am just now exploring this very topic. I have been so busy caring for mom that I never allowed myself to be open to something that I would truly enjoy doing! As soon as I figure it out – I will let you know! :)

Paula, as I enter the “sandwich” part of my life, I realize it becomes as difficult to hear the muse as it was when my kids were little ones…best of luck and thanks for stopping by!

I am lucky enough to have so many things I love to do. Life is about having gratitude for each day. We are all so blessed. Thanks for this wonderful post.

Nancy, I agree that you have many things in your life that you love to do. A lucky girl indeed! One second thought, a girl who made good choices to allow her to hear the muse! Thanks for stopping by :)
